Quaker Meetinghouse Celebrates Marion Manley: Miami’s First Woman Architect

Marion Manley is finally getting the recognition she deserved in her lifetime. Miami’s first woman architect, responsible for much of the design of the University of Miami’s mid-century modern architecture, is being celebrated at the Miami Friends Meeting on Sunday, March 6 at 2 pm with a lecture and open house co-sponsored by Dade Heritage Trust.

Manley designed the simple Quaker structure, one of her last works, in keeping with Friends’ traditional simplicity and Manley’s own simple, open-to-nature style.

Carie Penabad, of the UM School of Architecture and co-author of  “Marion Manley: Miami’ First Woman Architect,” will give a power point presentation and sign books. Gwladys Scott, who lives in a house Manley built to her specifications, will talk about her experiences working with Manley. Directions to her home will be given, which she will open for attendees at 4pm.

The Miami Friends Meetinghouse is located at 1185 Sunset Drive, opposite Sunset Elementary School. The event is free as part of Dade Heritage Days celebration of historic Miami-Dade.
